A state of emergency has been declared in Tonga as they prepare for the full force of Cyclone Gita to hit tonight.
The tropical cyclone is expected to intensify to a category five cyclone, the highest possible.
Tonga's National Emergency Management Committee held an urgent meeting yesterday confirming that all schools would be closed today until further notice.
Officers from the armed forces assisted with the preparations this morning, picking up any rubbish and loose objects in front of residential homes this morning.
District and town officers have also been advised to patrol their villages and assist elderly residents who may need assistance.
Cyclone Gita is expected to hit the islands of Tongatapu, 'Eua and Ha'apai around midnight tonight and then head towards Fiji tomorrow.
Authorities are urging locals to follow instructions to prevent any fatalities or damages.
