Niue students learn maths through culture

Children in Niue will get a chance to learn and understand maths using their cultural setting.

The mathematical approach devised by Massey University's Dr. Roberta Hunter has raised achievement rates for Māori and Pacific students all around New Zealand.

Dr. Hunter says input from parents and teachers in Niue has been invaluable in transforming learning in the classrooms to match cultural values.

"Those children on Niue island had this rich understanding of mathematics in the setting they're in," she says. "We've gone in there and talked about the knowledge these children need but also how they're going to use it in their life."

Dr. Hunter is of Cook Island heritage.
