Former Labour MP steps down from MFAT

Former Labour list MP and Cabinet Minister Shane Jones' role as the Pacific Economic Ambassador will come to an end tomorrow.

Jones has served as New Zealand's Pacific Economic Ambassador under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, for three years and says he's ready for a change.

He could not comment on speculation that he'll stand for New Zealand First in Whangarei in this year's general election.

"The knowledge and the experience I've gained will not go to waste," he says.

"After I move on, I can be a lot more free with my future plans."
