There is some speculation around plans about China building a military base in Vanuatu.

Political watchdogs say Chinese military presence in the Pacific could destabilise international security in the region.
Vanuatu Daily Post media director, Dan McGarry, says Chinese embassy officials have brushed off the claims as ridiculous, while senior government officials in Vanuatu say it was never on the table.
"Establishing a base at this point in time it would only destabilise matters here... I don't see the incentive for China to destabilise things at this point in time."
"The only source I can find are people who don't understand the dynamics very well and who are speculating."
