The boys were presented with a sulu (formal lavalava) and an island-style dress shirt to match.

The South Auckland school's head rugby coach, Saua Leaupepetele, says the new look is about promoting Pacific culture to strengthen team and school spirit.

"There's a sense of pride and a sense of belonging," he says.

The boys are happy with their new uniforms which replace the usual blazer and trousers.

Leaupepetele says blazers cost around $150 each, and this change has saved a lot of money.

"That money was able to go back into other areas in rugby."
