Tommy Nee sleeping rough for youth homelessness

Award-winning Niuean artist Tommy Nee will be hitting the cold hard concrete next month in support of ending youth homelessness.

The 23-year-old has written a song to support the cause, Walk With Youdonating every dollar made to the Lifewise Big Sleepout event in Auckland.

The event calls on business and community leaders to step out and experience one night of homelessness to raise awareness and funds for homeless people.

Around 41,000 New Zealanders are homeless. More than half of them are under the age of 25.

Tommy says it's time for New Zealand to stop sweeping the issue under the rug.

"There's so many brown faces out there on the street and it's not necessarily our fault," he says. "It's a huge matter and it's time to do something about it."

The recent Vodafone Pacific Music Awards winner says he's experienced a few nights of sleeping in his car and he's looking forward to supporting the cause.

"It's not an easy experience especially during winter," he says.

"It's something we need to start talking about. We only live once so we should really spend that time contributing towards the world and global prosperity."

The Big Sleepout will be on July 7 outside AUT University's City Campus.
