Community coming together to find solutions for homeless

A community march will be held in South Auckland this weekend, calling for better support and care for the homeless.

Community leaders in Manurewa will be hosting the Hikoi for Hope for the Homeless event tomorrow.

The event was prompted by the death of a homeless man, Haamai Manahi, outside the Manurewa Methodist Church on July 11.

The church's minister, Reverend Vaitu'ulala Ngahe, says they want to put an end to the rising number of freedom sleepers who die sleeping rough.

Auckland Council figures list 24,000 people as homeless, with an unknown number who have lost their lives due to extreme deprivation.

Manurewa MP Louisa Wall says providing homes for Auckland's homeless is not the only answer to the city's growing number of freedom sleepers.

Wall says the community needs to listen to the solutions suggested by freedom sleepers themselves, to be able to assist effectively.

The Hikoi for Hope for the Homeless will start at 12pm tomorrow, at the Manurewa Methodist Parish.
