A record number of around 7000 teenagers have signed up for the new season of baseball, which gets underway next month in 19 clubs around the country.
The sport's chief executive, Ryan Flynn, says the recently added Olympic sport is growing in popularity.
"For years we were predominantly an Auckland sport," he says.
Flynn says they now have clubs spread across the regions in the North and South Islands and attributes the growing interest to the sport's worldwide appeal.
"The beautiful thing is that it's every race in the country, Maori, Pacific Islander, Caucasian, Japanese, Koreans," he says. "Baseball is a kind of sport that every body type is good for."
Auckland is set to host an international under-15 baseball tournament in January.
